University of Windsor Basketball Teams

National Champion Team Recognition Award 2006
The Board of Directors recognized Assumption University of Windsor 1963 and the University of Windsor 1964, 1966, 1967, and 1969 Basketball Championship teams. The teams won 5 Canadian Intercollegiate Union Championships, (C.l.A.U.) in 7 years. They compiled a 52 won, 0 loss record in the Ontario Quebec Athletic Association Western Division, and a C.I.A.U. won/loss record of 10 and 0. Their overall record was:

1963 23 3 Assumption Lancers over Acadia U. – 53-50
1964 22 5 University of Windsor over UBC – 94-70
1966 15 10 University of Windsor over U of Calgary – 95-83
1967 18 8 University of Windsor over UBC – 87-82
1969 17 6 University of Windsor over Waterloo Lutheran – 76-63

Overflow crowds at home and away were entertained by an up tempo style of play. Head coach Bob Samaras introduced “Blitz Basketball”, which featured quick and high scoring, forced turnovers, a variety of full and half court presses, multiple defenses, and utilizing all players. Perhaps the teams being honored are the best in the long basketball tradition, at that institution. The players who received C.I.A.U., M.V.R or All Tournament Team Honours were:

1964- Bob Horvath, Joe Green
1966- Marty Kwiatkowski, Angelo Mazzuchin
1967- Marty Kwiatkowski, Bob Navetta
1969- Chris Wydrinski, Sante Salvador
